Road Rescue: a traffic puzzle where you run the lights, not the cars

Our intersection-control puzzle game for Android. Cars drive themselves; you switch the signals, and a validator checks every level can actually be cleared.

The problem

Traffic games usually put you behind the wheel. We wanted the opposite: a puzzle where the player is the system, not the driver, and a single badly timed green light is the whole mistake.

What we built

We built a grid of self-driving vehicles and player-controlled signals, with the movement rules kept in a tested engine. A level validator runs over every board, so a level only ships once it is machine-verified solvable.

Key features

  • Intersection control: tap a signal to change which lane flows
  • Cars, taxis, buses and trucks, with long vehicles taking two cells
  • Rescue missions where ambulances and fire trucks arrive on a countdown
  • 30 handcrafted levels across three packs, each machine-verified solvable
  • One to three stars per level, based on how fast the board clears
  • A daily challenge generated from the device date, identical worldwide and fully offline
  • An endless mode with escalating waves, 10 achievements and three unlockable road themes

Challenges and how we handled them

  • Making gridlock fair

A traffic board can deadlock in ways a designer never sees. The validator plays each level out, so a board that cannot be cleared never reaches the store.
