Native rider and driver apps for a ride-hailing platform

Engineering work on native rider and driver apps for Android and iOS: live trip tracking, in-ride chat, scheduled rides and driver onboarding with identity checks.

The problem

A ride-hailing operator needed rider and driver apps on both platforms that could match riders with nearby drivers, track trips live, and onboard drivers with proper document and identity checks.

What we built

As part of a larger engineering team, we worked mainly on the native Android apps. Riders search for a car, see a fare estimate, track the driver live and chat during the trip. Drivers complete onboarding, accept and run trips with location streamed along the road, and see their earnings.

Key features

  • Phone number login with OTP and profile set-up
  • Map with place search, pin-drop pickup and route drawing
  • Ride types with fare estimates
  • Live driver search and trip tracking over WebSockets
  • In-ride chat with delivered and seen receipts
  • Scheduled rides, ride history, ratings and disputes
  • Driver onboarding with licence, permit and vehicle documents, and a selfie identity check
  • Driver trip flow with snap-to-road location updates, trip history and earnings
  • Push notifications and in-app language settings

Technology stack

The main technologies used in this project.

  • Kotlin
  • Java
  • Android MVVM
  • Hilt
  • Room
  • Coroutines
  • Swift
  • Socket.IO
  • Google Maps Platform
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging

Our role

Contribution as part of a multi-company engineering team, mainly on the Android rider and driver apps. We did not build the whole platform.

Challenges and how we handled them

  • Live location that looks right on the map

Raw GPS points jump around. Driver locations are snapped to the road before they are streamed, so riders see the car move along real streets.

  • Driver checks before the first trip

Drivers upload their documents and pass a selfie check, and wait in an approval state until operations staff have reviewed them.
